Build with Gemma NYC: On-Device AI for Healthcare is a one-day, in-person hackathon building the next generation of healthcare tools with Google's open Gemma 4 models. Approved and prize-funded by Google's Gemma team, with a $2,000 prize pool distributed via Kaggle.
Healthcare has the hardest privacy constraints in software, and Gemma 4 is built for exactly that: it runs locally, so patient data never has to leave the device. You'll have one day to ship a working prototype and demo it live.
Three tracks:
- Voice for Care: scribes, intake, triage, reminders, and accessible, multilingual patient communication.
- Agentic Care Copilots: agents that automate healthcare admin like prior authorization, referrals, and scheduling.
- On-Device Private Health Tools: fully offline tools where patient data never touches the cloud.
Scope: decision-support tools for documentation, navigation, accessibility, triage, and education. Not diagnosis or treatment. Synthetic or public data only.
Schedule (Saturday, July 25):
- 11:00 AM: Doors, check-in, kickoff
- 12:00 PM: Build begins
- 5:00 PM: Submissions lock
- 5:00 PM: Live demos + judging
- 6:00 PM: Winners announced
Beginners welcome, no healthcare background required. Bring a laptop and an idea.

Requirements
Each team submits by the deadline:
- A working live demo (hosted web app, interactive terminal recording, or a functional Kaggle Notebook)
- A Kaggle Writeup covering your architecture, how you used Gemma 4, and the challenges you overcame
- A public code repository (GitHub or Kaggle Notebook), documented, clearly showing your Gemma 4 implementation
Submissions must make genuine, core use of a Gemma 4 model. All projects are submitted and judged on Kaggle: https://www.kaggle.com/competitions/build-with-gemma-nyc-on-device-ai-for-healthcare
Judging (100 points): Gemma Integration (30), Innovation & Impact (30), Functionality (20), Presentation & Writeup (20).

Judging Criteria
-
Gemma Integration — 30 points
How effectively did the team use Gemma 4? Is Gemma core to the solution rather than an add-on? Judges consider how well the model is applied through prompting, RAG, fine-tuning, function-calling, or on-device deployment. -
Innovation & Impact — 30 points
Does the project solve a meaningful healthcare problem? Is the approach creative, relevant, and genuinely useful for patients or clinicians? Bonus for solutions that lean into privacy-first, on-device value. -
Functionality — 20 points
Does the prototype actually work? Is the live demo convincing and reasonably complete for a one-day build? -
Presentation & Writeup — 20 points
Is the Kaggle Writeup clear and well-documented? Does the demo clearly explain the problem, the solution, and how Gemma 4 was used
